Reflections on Baya

Baya inspires me because she embodies the creative feminine force that I have always admired in my Algerian environment. She has transformed her imagination into a recognised artistic universe, nourished by simple, ancestral gestures. Her paintings echo tapestries, embroidery and everyday objects, sublimated by colour and dreams.
Like her, I grew up surrounded by women who were constantly creating: Kabyle mothers and grandmothers who wove, embroidered, decorated and invented new forms every day. Baya has given this heritage a universal reach, and that is what I too try to do in my jewellery.
What I admire about her is her fidelity to her imagination, her ability to assert herself in a world dominated by other voices, and to remain deeply rooted in her identity while speaking to the whole world.
Through my work, I pay tribute to this energy. My jewellery is like ‘wearable tapestries’, fragments of memory and colour that I offer to the eye and to the touch, hoping to convey a little of the boldness and freedom that Baya embodies.
Réflexion sur Baya
Baya m’inspire parce qu’elle incarne cette force créative féminine que j’ai toujours admirée dans mon environnement algérien. Elle a su transformer son imaginaire en un univers artistique reconnu, alors qu’il était nourri par des gestes simples et ancestraux. Dans ses toiles, on retrouve l’écho des tapisseries, des broderies et des objets du quotidien sublimés par la couleur et le rêve.
Comme elle, j’ai grandi entourée de femmes qui créaient sans cesse : des mères et des grands-mères kabyles qui tissaient, brodaient, ornaient et inventaient chaque jour des formes nouvelles. Baya a su donner à cet héritage une portée universelle, et c’est ce que j’essaie moi aussi de faire dans mes bijoux.
Ce que j’admire chez elle, c’est sa fidélité à son imaginaire, sa capacité à s’affirmer dans un monde dominé par d’autres voix, et à rester profondément enracinée dans son identité tout en parlant au monde entier.
À travers mon travail, je rends hommage à cette énergie. Mes bijoux sont des “tapisseries portées”, des fragments de mémoire et de couleur que j’offre au regard et au toucher, en espérant transmettre un peu de cette audace et de cette liberté que Baya incarne.
